Acanthus scrolls are carved over the whole top of this luxury chess table, round an inlaid board with brass coordinate discs, and it stands on four cabriole legs with a felt-lined drawer in the apron for the 32 turned pieces. 60 × 60 cm top, 70 cm high / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 27.6″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the chess table that makes the room look furnished. The top is shaped in a soft serpentine on all four sides and every part of it outside the squares is cut with leaf scrolls on a stippled ground; the apron carries a smaller band of the same carving, and each leg has a carved knee and a scrolled foot. The drawer slides out from the front, lined in black felt, and holds the whole army.

The pieces are turned in two woods with carved detail — pale for one side, dark for the other — and sit ready on the inlaid field between games, or go back in the drawer. Two chairs and it is an evening.

Is the carving real? Yes. The scrolls on the top and apron, the knees of the legs and the scrolled feet are all cut into the beech in relief, with the ground stippled by hand; the chessboard is inlaid wood and the coordinates are brass discs. Nothing is printed or applied.
