Armenian Coat of Arms Epoxy Backgammon Board
Armenia's emblem usually appears in gold, red and blue. Here it appears in green and turquoise — the colours of the country's stone and its water rather than its flag — and the effect is completely different. The coat of arms is hand-carved into warm walnut at the centre of this board, and sweeping panels of marbled green and teal epoxy resin fan out around it, framed by deep zigzag carving and carved spiral corners.
It is the emblem seen at ease rather than on parade, which suits an object built for evenings rather than ceremonies. The resin is jewel-toned and slightly translucent, so the panels shift as you walk around the board, while the carved walnut stays deep and matte and lets the colour do the moving.
Open the clasps, let the hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field waits inside. In Armenia this game is nardi, played everywhere by everyone, and this is nardi dressed for the occasion — a luxury Armenian backgammon board that looks as good closed on a shelf as it does open with the checkers out and an argument already underway.
