Luxury Walnut Backgammon Set - Silver Inlay Ornament
Inlay is a completely different craft from carving, and much less forgiving. Carving removes wood and you can work your way out of a slip. Inlay means cutting a channel to an exact width and laying real silver into it — a fraction too wide and the metal sits loose, a fraction too narrow and it will not seat at all. There is no second attempt on a line once it is cut. The ornament at the centre of this board, and the fine silver threading that follows it, were done that way, by hand, one channel at a time.
Walnut is the only sensible wood to do it in. Silver needs darkness behind it or the line disappears, and walnut is the deepest brown in the workshop — so every silver stroke reads sharp and bright against it, and stays that way as the wood darkens with age. Around the centre the carver has cut delicate birds and vines into the corners, so the piece works at two speeds: the silver catches you from across the room, and the carved detail keeps you there once you have crossed it.
Then it opens. The clasps release, the bronze hinges swing back, and inside is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field in the same walnut. This is the only silver-inlaid board in the range, and it behaves like it — a luxury walnut backgammon set that would be perfectly at home never being played on, and is far better for being played on anyway.
