The interesting thing about this board is the part that has not been carved. Scrollwork runs out symmetrically across the lid, the field behind it is cut into fine cross-hatching, and then right at the centre the carver stopped and left a smooth oval of bare wood — deliberately, and with the confidence it takes to leave a gap in the middle of your own work.

It is there for a name. A wedding date, a set of initials, the year somebody retired: this hand-carved wooden backgammon board arrives finished and still unfinished, waiting for whatever you decide belongs at the centre of it. Or leave it exactly as it is — a plain oval surrounded by all that pattern reads as calm rather than empty. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is ready either way. Carry it in by the cut-out handle and let the person you are giving it to decide.
