A lion's face looks straight out of a round frame at the centre of the lid on this luxury backgammon set, its mane carved in heavy locks, with a cast bronze lion in a recess at each end, carved lattice across the rest of the face and an ornate cast bronze carry handle on the top edge. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Everything on this wooden backgammon set answers the lion: the handle is a curved bronze casting with scrollwork rather than a cut-out, the clasps and hinges match it, and the two small lions at the ends are cast in the same metal. The big face is carved in relief from the beech and left matt against a fine scored lattice, the outline is shaped in curves, and a dotted band follows the edge.

Inside, the field is inlaid — pale points with arrowhead tips and an inlaid ornament in each half — and the checkers keep the theme, pale and dark wooden discs each set with a cast bronze lion. Two dice and a black cloth carrying bag come with it.
