Big squares, no ornament, a place for every piece: this classic chess set is a 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ folding board with the chessboard across both outer faces and two black felt-lined trays inside, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned wooden pieces on felted bases.

The face of this wooden chess set is nothing but the field — inlaid pale and walnut-brown squares inside a thin border with the coordinates cut into it, polished to a soft gloss. The two halves fold shut on brass clasps into a slim case, and open the other way to the felt trays, so the pieces ride inside the board rather than in a separate box.

The pieces are turned in pale and brown wood in the familiar tall pattern — flared kings with a finial, carved knights, rooks with a notched crown — each with a black felt disc underneath so they slide without a sound. Squares broad enough for a full-height king and a board that lies flat: equipment for playing, not for looking at.
