Curling waves along the ends and a twisted braid down the sides frame this travel chess set — a dark-stained 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ board with a waved edge, the chessboard across its outer faces and a line-work backgammon field inside, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned wooden pieces and a bag.

The two bands on this wooden chess set are carved in relief on a stippled ground: a running wave of curling scrolls along the top and bottom rails, a two-strand braid along the sides, each turning the corner into the other. The edge waves in and out, the squares are inlaid pale and brown wood, and the coordinates are cut into the border.

Turned in pale and dark-stained wood, the pieces are sized to the small squares and store inside the board, which folds shut on brass clasps. Under the lid the second field is cut in line work — points with arrow tips, an interlaced knot roundel in each half, starred scallops along the rails — though only the chess pieces ship with it.
