Trefoil lilies march round the field of this chess set in an unbroken band, cut in relief on a stippled ground between beaded lines, on a square-edged board stained dark. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 turned pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set with a border you can read like a text: every lily is cut with three lobes and a stem, spaced evenly on all four sides with a small bead between each pair, the ground behind them stippled by hand. The squares are inlaid pale and dark with the coordinates carved beside them, and the 32 pieces are turned in two woods, pale and near-black.

Two bronze clasps hold it shut. Flip it and open it the other way and you find a backgammon field carved into the inside — pale points, a flower wheel in each half — waiting for checkers of your own, since the set is sold with the chess pieces. Full-size squares, half-size when it goes away.
