This is the wooden chess set that sits like a small chest. The frame is moulded in a run of beads with a scrolled outer lip, the band inside it is stippled by hand, and the coordinates sit in brass discs beside the inlaid squares. Each piece is turned in wood — pale for one army, dark walnut for the other — and finished with a cast bronze crown, finial or horse head, with a bronze collar at the base.

The four feet are cast brass in a scrolled pattern, lifting the board clear of the table. Compact enough for a desk, dense enough to stay put — a serious set at small scale, with a bag for the pieces.
