Two lions hold up the crowned shield of Georgia with Saint George riding across it on the lid of this carved Georgian backgammon set, the five-cross flag in a roundel to the left, a man wrestling a tiger in a roundel to the right, and a grapevine heavy with fruit winding round all three under a cut-out carry handle. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm / 11.8″ × 23.6″ closed, handmade in Armenia.

The other outer face of the wooden backgammon board keeps the vine and adds three more roundels: a domed cathedral, the map of Georgia in relief and a hilltop fortress, all on a cross-hatched ground with the grape bunches standing fully round. Inside, the walnut field carries incised lattice points, the coat of arms drawn in one half and the map of Georgia with its regions named in Georgian script in the other, carved scalloped rails and a long recess in each corner for the dice.

Lift it by the handle or slide it into the brown carrying bag that comes with it, along with dark and pale wooden checkers and dice; brass hinges and clasps keep it closed on the way.

Is the coat of arms carved? Yes — the lions, crown, shield and rider stand in relief over a cross-hatched ground cut line by line, and the grape bunches are carved almost in the round. The arms and map inside are incised into the walnut with the region names lettered by hand.
