Eagle on the left, lion on the right, the shield with Ararat between them: the Armenian coat of arms fills a roundel on the lid of this carved Armenian backgammon set, with acanthus scrolls and lattice corner panels covering the pale walnut around it. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm / 11.8″ × 23.6″ closed, handmade in Armenia.

The arms are cut in relief on a stippled ground, feathers and mane picked out strand by strand, and a beaded ring closes the roundel; the other outer face carries a chequered panel between the same carved scrolls. Inside, the wooden backgammon board is walnut with lattice points, a scroll-ringed disc in each half holding a pomegranate, the outline of Ararat and the word ՀԱՅԱՍՏԱՆ, all incised into the wood, with a recess in each corner for the dice.

Two brass hinges and side clasps hold the case shut; with it come dark and pale wooden checkers, dice and a brown cloth carrying bag.

Is the coat of arms carved? Yes — the eagle, lion, shield and scrolls stand out in relief from a stippled ground cut point by point, and the lattice panels in the corners are carved the same way. The points and discs inside are incised lines in the walnut, not print.
