The squares are inlaid pale and dark at full size, so the pieces stand clear of each other; the border is textured with a fine stipple rather than carved in pattern, framed by plain lines; the coordinates are cut into the rim. The pieces are turned in two woods, pale and dark, with carved horse-head knights.
