A basket-weave lattice carved into every side of the frame is the whole ornament of this chess set — a flat, thick board in dark-stained wood standing on a cast brass foot at each corner, with 32 small cast-metal pieces, one army gold-toned and one blackened. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″, handmade in Armenia, with a bag.

The lattice on this wooden chess set is cut as crossing diagonals with a tooled band along the outer edge, then stained a deep brown and polished so the ridges catch the light; the squares are inlaid pale and brown wood and the coordinates sit on brass discs let into the border. The corner feet are cast in relief and raise the slab clear of the table.

The pieces are openwork castings — filigree bodies, crowned kings, maned knights and turreted rooks — small in the hand and dense for their size, sixteen in a gold tone and sixteen blackened. No hinge and no fold: this is a solid board that stays out on a side table, with the pieces in the bag between games.
