Lion Head and Metal Lions Backgammon Set with Carry Handle — Handmade in Armenia
A lion's head, mane flowing in deep relief, fills the beaded roundel at the centre of this carved wooden backgammon set, with a small cast-metal lion head set into a roundel at each end, a fine lattice cut across the rest of the lid and a cut-out carry handle through the top edge. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.
The carved lion's brow and muzzle stand furthest from the stippled ground and the mane is cut in long overlapping locks; the two metal lions are brass-toned. On the other outer face the same two emblems flank a chequered panel of pale and dark squares.
Lift the lid and the two dark halves show light-wood points with arrow tips, a light interlaced star at the centre of each, rope-carved bars in the handle cut-outs and a long recess for the dice in every corner. The board ships with thirty-two turned wooden checkers, two dice and its carrying bag.

Is the big lion bronze? No — the large lion's head is carved wood in deep relief; only the four small lion heads at the ends are cast metal with a brass-coloured finish. The points and stars inside are pale wood set into the dark beech.
