This is the wooden chess set that pairs lattice with metal. Every diamond on the frame is cut with a dot at the crossing and the pattern runs through the handles to a waved edge; the coordinates sit in brass discs beside the inlaid squares. Each piece has a pierced cast crown and a cast base in a silver finish, with a turned wooden body between — pale for one army, dark for the other.

The second game waits under the lid: a backgammon field with pale, leaf-tipped points, a carved flower wheel in each half and a checker trough down either side, the handles showing as lifting slots in the rails. Wooden checkers, a pair of dice and the bag come with it.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Are the pieces metal? The crowns, finials, horse heads and bases are cast metal in a silver finish, pierced through in scrolls, and the bodies between them are turned wood, pale on one side and dark on the other — so each piece carries metal heft top and bottom. The board is dark-stained beech: lattice carved, handles cut through, squares and points inlaid.
