The carved palmettes stand in deep relief along the walnut frame, one after another with a bead line above and a stippled ground behind, the same on all four sides. The coordinates are carved beside the two-tone squares; the board folds to 11.8 × 23.6 in (30 × 60 cm) on bronze hinges with clasps.
Open it and the backgammon field is drawn in line work into the walnut with a flower disc in each half. The chess pieces pair pale bodies for one side and black bodies for the other: each has cast-metal crowns, collars, and bases, with horse-head knights. Checkers and dice go in the bag.
