Ask an Armenian to name one battle and you will hear Avarayr. In 451 AD, Vardan Mamikonyan led his outnumbered countrymen against an empire that demanded they give up their faith — he fell on that field, and still won: Armenia stayed Christian, and Vardan became a saint. That is the man riding across this handmade Armenian backgammon set, carved on horseback the way every Armenian schoolbook and church wall remembers him.
The old chronicler of Avarayr wrote that death, understood, is immortality — and fifteen centuries later the name Vardan still means standing firm. On a hand-carved wooden backgammon board the spirit translates well: nardi is a game of nerve, of holding your line when the dice run cold. Open the bronze clasps, set the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field, and hold yours.
