Armenian Eagle and Lion Coat of Arms Backgammon Set — Handmade in Armenia

The eagle and lion of Armenia hold the quartered shield, Ararat and the Ark at its centre, in a recessed roundel on the smooth lid of this Armenian backgammon set, an incised leaf scroll in each corner of the straight-edged board and nothing else competing with the arms. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

The reverse carries a chequered panel of pale and dark squares, each dark square cut with a small knot and the edges lettered and numbered, with the same scrolls in the corners.

Inside, the coat of arms is incised again in each half between outlined points with fleur tips, above scalloped bar edges; round dice recesses sit in the rails and the hinges are brass-toned.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is a bag included? No. The old copy listed a carrying bag, but the five photos show only the board, so it is not included and the checkers and dice are listed from the maker's specification. The board is straight-edged with no cut-out grip. The lettered edges of the reverse panel and the arms inside were never mentioned before.

How do I look after it? Wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth and brush the roundel gently. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat; store it closed with the checkers inside.
