The banks of this river were decided by a tree, not by a person. That is the whole principle of river work: you take two live-edge slabs of walnut, set them apart exactly as the wood's natural edge falls, and pour resin into the gap between them. Nobody draws the shape. The turquoise epoxy on this board found its own course, wandering where the bark line wandered, narrow in some places and wide in others, and there is no way to make a second one that matches.

What makes it work at this level is the walnut on either side. Every knot, burl and streak of figure has been kept rather than cut away — the wild parts of the plank, the sections most workshops discard — and the translucent turquoise runs between them like meltwater through rock. Ground flat and polished, the whole top becomes one plane you can play on, and it changes completely depending on whether the light comes from a window or a lamp.

Then it opens. The clasps release, the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is waiting inside. It is a strange and rather wonderful thing to own a nardi board that would hold its own as a piece of furniture with the game removed entirely — and then to use it, most evenings, for exactly what it was built for.
