A turquoise river, bright as shallow sea, winds between islands of burl walnut on every face of this luxury backgammon set — the slabs kept to their live edges, the epoxy poured into the gap and polished flush. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 30 turned checkers, dice and a bag.

This is the wooden backgammon set where the tree drew the design: the bark line decides where the resin goes, wide in one place and a thread in the next, and the burl on either side keeps every knot and swirl that a plainer board would cut away. The resin is translucent, so daylight sinks into it and comes back blue. Closed, it is a slim glossy slab on brass clasps.

Open it and the field is the same turquoise and burl, the points marked by scalloped rails along each edge and a trough at each end for the checkers and dice. The checkers are turned wood with ringed faces, fifteen pale and fifteen dark, and both dice come with them.

Is the resin part of the board? It is. The walnut slabs are set apart at their live edges, the turquoise resin is poured into the gap and left to cure, and the whole face is then ground and polished until wood and resin sit level — the same on the lid and on the field inside. There is no coating over the wood and no print.
