Round Pomegranate Chess Set with Lattice Top — Handmade in Armenia

A cast pomegranate sits in a round recess at each end of this round chess set, and a diamond lattice covers every part of the top outside the squares. It is 50 cm / 19.6″ across, handmade in Armenia from beech and stained a warm brown, folding in half, with 32 turned wooden pieces and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that is not a square. Sixteen straight sides make up the circle, the lattice is cut over the whole top with a dot at every crossing, and the square field sits in the middle with its coordinates on brass discs. The pieces are turned in two woods, the dark side stained near-black, the knights with carved horse heads.

The pomegranate at each end is cast in metal, split open with its seeds showing, on a star-stippled ground inside the recess. The two halves fold together on bronze hinges into a half-round that shuts on clasps, and the pieces go in the bag.
