Grape bunches, vine leaves and split pomegranates are carved deep round the frame of this walnut chess set, with Mount Ararat in pale relief beside a carry handle at each end. 40 × 40 cm / 15.7″ × 15.7″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned pieces, a felt-lined inside and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set where the frame is the main event. The fruit stands well off a stippled ground — grapes in full bunches down each side, leaves curling between them, a pomegranate in each lower corner — and the peaks rise at the top and bottom edge with their snow in the pale wood. The coordinates sit on brass discs beside the inlaid maple and walnut squares, and the edge waves in scallops.

The handles are cut clean through the wood at both ends, so the board lifts like a case; inside, both halves are lined in black felt for the pieces. Small enough to travel, carved enough to stay on the table when the game is over.
