Pegasus rears on its hind legs with both wings spread on the lid of this carved backgammon set, mane and tail flying, in relief on a cross-hatched ground inside a rope-rimmed roundel, with leaf scrolls either side, a rope border and an oval grip cut through the wavy-edged lid. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Flip it over for the quieter face: a chequered panel let into the wood in two tones, a carved bunch of grapes with curling leaves at each end of it, the grip repeated underneath and a pair of small brass-toned clasps at the front.

The inside is left plain apart from the line work — drop-shaped points and a petalled wheel incised into each half — with scalloped bar edges, troughs along the rails and corners and two plain brass-toned hinges on the spine.

How do I look after it? Brush the wings, the scrolls and the cross-hatched ground with a soft dry brush and wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth. Keep the board out of direct sun and away from heat, and close both clasps before lifting it by the grip.
