Mount Ararat is inlaid in pale wood beneath a carry handle cut through each end of this walnut chess set, with leaf scrolls carved on a stippled ground round the frame. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia, with fitted storage for the 32 turned pieces inside and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set that closes like a case. Both handles are cut clean through the frame with a scalloped grip, the peaks sit just below each one with their snow in the maple, and the acanthus scrolls run from the corners along the sides in relief on a stippled ground. The squares are inlaid maple and walnut with the coordinates carved beside them, and the outline waves in scallops all round.

Open it and one half is lined in black felt while the other is cut with a fitted slot for every one of the 32 turned pieces, so nothing rattles when the board is carried. A full-size field that still folds to half its width and lifts by the handle.
