Armenian Backgammon Set - Ararat and Monasteries
The carver gave this Armenian backgammon set a whole landscape. Mount Ararat rises at the center of the lid with an ancient monastery standing on either side — the things Armenia builds and the mountain it looks up to, hand-carved in relief and held together by a scrollwork frame.
Hang a scene like that on a wall and people admire it from across the room; carve it into a handmade wooden backgammon board and people gather around it. Someone traces the mountain, someone recognizes a dome, and then the checkers come out and the evening finds its shape. Inside is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field.
