Armenia's outline, cut in pale wood with its regions drawn in, fills the rope-rimmed oval at the centre of this Armenian backgammon set, with broad leaf scrolls carved on either side across a cross-hatched ground and a rope-and-leaf border round the lid. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

Turn it over and the reverse is a playing surface of its own: a chequered panel inlaid in pale and dark squares, held between two leaf-scroll cartouches carved on the same cross-hatched ground as the lid.

Inside, the map returns as pale inlay with every region named in Armenian, one in each half between drop-shaped inlaid points, with side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. The pale and dark checkers, two dice and the carrying bag are all photographed.

How do I look after it? Brush the scrolls with a soft dry brush and wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heat; store it closed with the checkers inside, in the bag.
