A scalloped frame carved with leaf scrolls surrounds the chessboard of this chess and backgammon set, and inside a pomegranate and a bunch of grapes sit in pale relief among the points. 50 × 50 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech, with 32 chess pieces, 32 checkers, a dice set and a carrying bag.

This is the wooden chess set with a full-size field and a shaped edge. The outline waves on all four sides, a spray of acanthus curls into each corner over a dotted ground, and a scroll cartouche sits at the centre of the top and bottom edges. The squares are pale and dark stained wood, and the whole board folds to 25 × 50 cm on bronze hinges.

Open it and the backgammon field has pale points in each half with a pomegranate on one side and grapes on the other — two fruits of the orchard. The 32 chess pieces are turned in light and dark wood and go in the bag with the checkers and dice. A board for the long evening, not the pocket.

Is the fruit inside carved or printed? Carved. The pomegranate and the grapes are cut in relief and left pale against the dark stain, and the points round them are pale wood too; on the lid, the acanthus corners, the cartouches and the dotted ground are cut into the beech. Nothing is printed or glued on.
