An eight-pointed brass star sits in a round recess at each corner of this luxury chess set, on a frame carved with a diamond lattice and cut with a carry handle at both ends; the 32 pieces are cast bronze on turned wooden bases. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia from beech and walnut.

This is the wooden chess set with metal at every corner and on every square. Each piece is an openwork casting in a gold-tone bronze finish — lattice bodies, crowned kings, horse-head knights — set on a turned base, pale for one army and dark for the other. The lattice on the frame runs edge to edge with the stars breaking it at the corners, the coordinates sit in brass discs, and the outline waves in scallops.

The handles are cut clean through both ends, so a full-size board still lifts like a case and folds to half its width on bronze hinges. Open it the other way and the inside is carved as a backgammon field, with a star inside a ring in each half.

Are the pieces solid bronze? Cast bronze, yes — each piece is an openwork casting with a gold-tone finish and darkened recesses, mounted on a turned wooden base, and noticeably heavier than any turned piece. The four stars are brass let into the corners; the lattice round them is cut into the wood.

Are backgammon checkers included? No. The set comes with the 32 bronze chess pieces and the bag. The inside of the board is carved as a backgammon field, so checkers and dice of your own turn it into a second game.
