Georgian Backgammon Set - King Vakhtang Gorgasali
Look past the horse for a second and notice what is behind him. The king rides across the lid of this handmade Georgian backgammon set in deep relief inside a carved oval frame — and at his back stands a fortress, which is the part of the story people usually skip. Vakhtang Gorgasali is remembered for founding Tbilisi, but founding a city in the fifth century mostly meant deciding where the walls went and then holding them. Carved scrollwork opens out around the frame to the border of the board.
Georgians called him Gorgasali — wolf-head — after the helmet he wore into battle, and it is a fair warning to whoever sits down opposite you. Backgammon is a game about walls too: you build your points, you hold the line, and you make the other player try to get past it. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is there for exactly that argument. This carved wooden backgammon board travels by its own cut-out handle, so the fortress comes with you.
