Blue Epoxy Backgammon Board - Eternity Sign
Everything on this lid comes out of the centre. The eternity sign is carved deep at the middle of the board, ringed by ornaments, and from it panels of glossy blue epoxy resin fan outward like rays — so the oldest symbol Armenians have appears to be the source of all the colour rather than a decoration sitting on top of it. Zigzag carving and carved spiral corners close the case at the edges.
It is a bold way to treat the arevakhach, and it works because the symbol can take it. The sign has meant continuity for well over a thousand years; putting it at the centre of something jewel-bright and modern says that continuity is not the same as being old-fashioned. The blue is marbled rather than flat, so it moves as you move, and the carved wood around it stays matte and quiet by contrast.
Open the clasps, let the hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is inside. This is a luxury backgammon set that genuinely works both ways — as good closed on a shelf, where the blue does its work from across the room, as it is open on a table with the checkers out and somebody complaining about the dice.
