Marbled gray-blue epoxy fills the dark squares of this chess set with storage, on a pale wooden field inside a lattice-carved frame, with a felt-lined drawer beneath for the 32 wooden pieces. The board is 50 × 50 × 11 cm / 19.6″ × 19.6″ × 4.3″, handmade in Armenia from beech.

This is the wooden chess set for a calm room. The resin is poured into each square and polished flush, and the gray drifts and clouds like polished slate, so no two squares match; the frame is carved in a fine diamond lattice, the coordinates sit on brass roundels, and the box stands on four low feet. The pieces are turned in light and dark wood and read sharply against the cool field.

The drawer slides out on metal runners, lined in felt, with room for the whole set — so the board stays out and the game is one pull away. Low on the table, quiet in colour, complete in itself. The chess set with drawers for the person who does not want a loud board.
