On this handmade Georgian backgammon set that outline is carved in pale relief inside a central oval, its name lettered in Georgian beside it, with carved scrollwork opening out around the frame and running to the border of the lid.

The carver made the country the lightest thing on the board, so it is the first thing your eye lands on and the last thing it leaves. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is underneath, where nothing is designed either: the board is fixed, the dice are not, and the shape of every game is just what happened. Carry this hand-carved wooden backgammon board in by its cut-out handle and let the evening take its own form.
