Georgian Backgammon Set - Flag of Georgia
Count the crosses — there are five, and that is the whole design. On this handmade Georgian backgammon set the flag is carved into a central shield in clean relief, the large cross reaching corner to corner and the four small ones set into the quarters, with interlaced ornament and carved scrollwork wound around the shield and out to the border of the lid. A flag cannot wave in wood, so the carver gave it something better: a frame it can hold still inside.
Georgians will happily tell you this banner is medieval, that it disappeared for centuries, and that the country took it back up in living memory. It is a flag with a comeback story, which is a useful thing to have looking at you when you are forty pips behind and thinking about resigning. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is there to prove the point one roll at a time. This carved wooden backgammon board lifts by its own cut-out handle and goes wherever the supra is.
