Five red-painted crosses on a pale-wood field make the flag of Georgia at the centre of this Georgian backgammon set, framed by a lobed rope-rimmed cartouche on a cross-hatched ground, scroll ornament either side and a rope border. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

The flag is the one painted element; the rest of the carved backgammon set is dark-stained beech, with an inlaid chequered panel between two leaf-scroll cartouches on the reverse.

Inside, the points are incised outlines rather than inlay, with an incised map of Georgia in each half, side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. The pale and dark checkers and the dice, one black and one white, are photographed on the open board.

Is the flag carved in plain relief? No — the old copy called it clean relief, but the crosses are painted red on a pale-wood field. The carrying bag in the old copy is not photographed and is not included; the checkers and dice are. The incised map inside was never mentioned before.
