The lions of Georgia rear up either side of the crowned shield with Saint George on horseback, all carved in deep relief inside the roundel on this Georgian backgammon set, with a small bronze disc of the same arms on each flank and the rest of the dark lid cut into diamond lattice. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm / 11.8″ × 23.6″ closed, handmade in Armenia.

Each half of the wooden backgammon board carries its own cast bronze handle, and the two meet along the top edge once the case is shut; the reverse face repeats the two arms discs either side of a chequered panel of pale and dark squares. Open it and the dark-stained field shows points inlaid in two pale tones, a pale coat of arms let into each half, a scroll border along the bottom, carved scalloped rails and a long recess in every corner for the dice cup.

Checkers in pale and dark wood, a dice cup, dice and a black cloth bag are all in the box; two side clasps and brass hinges keep the case shut between games.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the coat of arms carved? Yes — the lions, shield and crown stand in relief over a pierced ground inside a stitched ring, and the lattice across the rest of the lid is cut line by line. The two flanking discs are bronze filigree inlays; the arms and points inside are pale wood let into the dark field.
