Georgia's coat of arms, crown, shield and two rampant lions, stands in pale wood on the lid of this carved backgammon set inside a cross-hatched oval of leaf scrolls, grapes at one corner and a pomegranate roundel at the other. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

The other face, the one that shows on a shelf when the Georgian backgammon set is closed, carries an inlaid chequered panel of pale and dark squares between two vine-leaf roundels.

Inside, the checkers and dice are photographed on inlaid fleur-tipped points, with an inlaid map of Georgia and its named regions in each half, side grips and brass-toned hinges. The carrying bag is photographed with the board too.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Is the whole lid wreathed in grapevines? No — the old copy described a full wreath of vines. There is one bunch of grapes with a vine leaf at the top-left corner and a pomegranate in a roundel at the top-right; the rest of the frame is leaf scrolls. The checkers, dice and carrying bag are all photographed with the set.
