Georgian Backgammon Set - Coat of Arms and Guardian Lions
The two lions on this board are rampant — up on their hind legs, which in heraldry has never meant resting. They stand either side of Saint George's shield with the crown above, all carved by hand in pale relief at the centre of this handmade Georgian backgammon set, and around the whole arrangement the carver has run a wreath of grapevines heavy with fruit. Two animals holding something up, and a harvest growing around them.
It is a good image to sit across from. A rampant lion is not guarding out of habit; it is mid-effort, holding a position it could drop at any moment and choosing not to. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field asks exactly the same of you for the next hour or two. Carry this hand-carved wooden backgammon board in by its cut-out handle and set it down between two people who both intend to win.
