Georgian Flag and Map Backgammon Set with Handle — Handmade in Armenia

Red-painted crosses on a pale-wood flag fill one roundel of this Georgian backgammon set; a pale-wood map of Georgia, regions outlined, საქართველო lettered above, fills the other, with a carved leaf knot between them and a rope border round the lid. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm, handmade in Armenia.

Apart from the five crosses nothing is painted — the flag field, map and lettering are pale wood set into dark-stained beech, and the reverse carries an inlaid chequered panel between two leaf-scroll cartouches.

Two more inlays wait inside: the Georgian coat of arms in one half and a second map of Georgia, regions named, in the other, each set between fleur-tipped points. Side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges complete the interior; the pale and dark checkers, two dice and carrying bag are photographed.

Is the flag uncoloured relief? No — the old copy said the flag was cut in clean relief, but the photos show its five crosses painted red on a pale-wood field. The map and lettering are unpainted pale wood. The arms and map inlaid inside were never mentioned before.

How do I look after it? Brush the carving with a soft dry brush and wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth; keep solvents off the painted crosses. Store it closed with the checkers inside, in the bag, out of direct sun.
