Georgian Arms and Flag Backgammon Set with Handle — Handmade in Armenia

Pale wood carries both emblems on this Georgian backgammon set: the coat of arms, two lions round the crowned shield, in one rope-rimmed roundel, the five-cross flag with red-painted crosses in the other, a leaf knot between them and a rope border. A cut-out carry handle runs through each half. 60 × 60 cm, handmade in Armenia.

Only the crosses are painted; everything else is wood, dark stain on the carved ground and pale wood for the arms, the flag field and the inlays. The reverse holds an inlaid chequered panel between two leaf-scroll cartouches.

Open, one half is inlaid with the coat of arms of Georgia and the other with a map of Georgia and its named regions, between fleur-tipped inlaid points, with side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. Pale and dark checkers, two dice and the carrying bag are all photographed.

Is the flag plain carved wood? Not quite — the old listing called it clean and geometric relief, but the photos show the flag field in pale wood with the five crosses painted red. The arms are unpainted pale wood. The inlaid arms and map inside were never mentioned before.
