Two interlaced ornaments sit side by side on this Armenian backgammon set, each one a knot of strands with no beginning and no end, joined across the lid by flowing scrollwork. Where most boards give the eye one place to rest, this one gives it two — and a road between them.
Interlace like this is the deep end of Armenian carving: the strands have to stay even where they cross or the whole illusion collapses. Open the board and a full 23.6" / 60 cm nardi field waits inside — a handmade wooden backgammon board that rewards a long look almost as much as a long game.
