Green like malachite, the dark squares of this travel chess set are marbled epoxy poured into a walnut board no bigger than a laptop, the coordinates on brass discs round the field. 30 × 30 cm / 11.8″ × 11.8″ open, handmade in Armenia, with 32 turned wooden pieces and a bag.

Each square on this wooden chess set is its own pour, swirling from emerald to a paler green and polished flush with the wood, and the walnut round it runs from pale sapwood to deep brown so no two squares sit on the same grain. The chessboard covers both outer faces, so closed it is a slim case with a brass clasp at the front, half the board on top and half underneath.

The pieces are turned wood, sixteen pale and sixteen dark-stained, the kings tipped with a contrasting finial and sized to the small squares. Under the lid the board opens to a second field cut in line work — cross-hatched points with arrow tips and a sun wheel in a scroll ring on each half — with a trough along each end. Only the chess pieces ship with it.
