This is the wooden chess set that suits any room because nothing on it argues with anything. The squares are pale and dark wood with the coordinates cut beside them, the frame is smooth walnut with its grain showing, and the only texture is the fine dotted band either side of the handle. Two brass clasps hold it shut.

Inside, both halves are lined in black felt and the 32 turned pieces — light and dark — ride in the case when it is closed. At 40 cm the squares are full size, so it is a real board for a student, a grandchild who has just learned the moves, or the office drawer.
