Head thrown back at a full moon, a wolf stands on a rock beside a fir tree inside the central roundel of this carved wooden backgammon set, with a cast-metal eight-pointed star set into a smaller roundel at each end, a fine lattice cut across the whole lid and a cut-out carry handle through the top edge. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

The wolf, moon, rock and tree are relief over a stippled ground and the stars are brass-toned metal that catches the light the matte wood does not. On the other outer face the same two metal stars flank a chequered panel of pale and dark squares.

Inside, the halves are dark stained with pale points let in, an arrow at each tip, a pale eight-pointed star in a beaded ring set into each half, rope-carved handle bars at the sides and corner dice recesses. Thirty-two turned wooden checkers and a pair of dice come with the board.
