A knot flower of twelve looping petals, carved in deep relief, fills the centre of this carved backgammon set, flanked by two small bronze filigree discs on a lid cut all over into diamond lattice, with a cast bronze handle on each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm / 11.8″ × 23.6″ closed, handmade in Armenia.

The two handles meet at the top edge when the case is shut. Turn the wooden backgammon board over and the other face carries a chequered panel of pale and dark squares between the same two filigree discs, again on the lattice ground. Inside, the field is dark-stained wood with the points inlaid in two pale tones, a pale inlaid flower disc in each half, a scroll border along the bottom edge, carved scalloped rails and a long recess in each corner for the dice cup.

Pale and dark wooden checkers, a dice cup and dice come with it, along with a black cloth carrying bag; brass hinges and two side clasps hold it closed.

Is the flower carved? Yes — the petals loop over and under one another in real relief inside a stitched ring, and the lattice across the rest of the lid is cut line by line. The two small discs are bronze filigree inlays; the points and flowers inside are pale wood let into the dark field.
