Armenian Backgammon Set with Bronze Handle - Flower Ornament
There is no story on this board. No emblem, no mountain, no saint, nothing to explain to anyone — and that is exactly the point. A single flower is cut deep into the centre of the lid, petal by petal, with a cast bronze roundel set on either side of it and the whole surrounding field worked by hand into fine cross-hatching. Every decision the carver made here was about beauty on its own terms, with nothing to hide behind.
The ornate bronze handle along the top edge is the last stroke of the same idea: it does a job, but it was clearly made to be admired while doing it. At 6 kg / 13.2 lb this is a substantial piece of work, and it announces itself the moment it comes into a room. Then the clasps release, the bronze hinges swing, and underneath all of that is a full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field — a luxury backgammon set that never forgets it is also a wooden backgammon board meant to be played on, most evenings, by people who are not being careful with it.
