Carved Crown and Metal Crowns Backgammon Set with Carry Handle — Handmade in Armenia

A closed royal crown, arches meeting under a cross at the top, is carved in relief at the centre of this wooden backgammon set, with a small cast-metal crown set into a roundel at each end, a fine lattice cut across the rest of the lid and a cut-out carry handle through the top edge. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

The carved crown's band, arches and cross stand clear of a stippled ground inside a beaded ring; the two metal crowns are silver-toned. On the other outer face of the wooden backgammon board the same two emblems flank a chequered panel of pale and dark squares.

The crown returns inside: a pale inlaid crown in each half — one closed, one open with a scalloped band — above pale inlaid points with arrow tips, with rope-carved handle bars at the sides and corner dice recesses. Thirty-two wooden checkers and a pair of dice are included.

Are the small crowns bronze? They are cast metal with a silver-coloured finish — four of them, two on each outer face. The large crown is carved wood in relief; the crowns and points inside are pale wood set into the dark beech.
