Look at what the eagle and the lion are actually carrying. On the lid of this handmade Armenian backgammon set the two supporters stand braced on either side of the shield, hand-carved in fine relief inside a deep oval frame — and the thing they are holding up is a mountain with a boat resting on it. Ararat and the Ark, the quartered shield of the old dynasties beneath, carved scrollwork spreading out around the whole emblem to the border of the board.
There is something in that arrangement worth keeping on a table you sit at. Nobody wins a game of backgammon by being loud about it; you win by holding a position, patiently, for as long as it takes — and by caring about what you are holding. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field is ready underneath. Carry this hand-carved wooden backgammon board in by its cut-out handle and set it down; the emblem does the introductions, and the dice take it from there.
