Eagle to the left, lion to the right, the Ararat shield held between them: the coat of arms of Armenia fills the scroll cartouche of this Armenian backgammon set, the sword, broken chain, wheat and ribbon carved beneath on a cross-hatched ground, with a bunch of grapes in the top-left corner and a split pomegranate in the top-right. A cut-out carry handle passes through the top edge of each half. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, handmade in Armenia.

On its back the wooden backgammon board pairs a vine leaf carved in a scroll cartouche at either end with a chequered panel inlaid in pale and dark squares between them.

Inside, the coat of arms returns as a pale wood inlay at the centre of each half, turned to face its player, among fleur-tipped inlaid points; side grips, corner dice recesses and brass-toned hinges. Thirty-two beech and walnut checkers and dice are included.

Good to Know Before You Buy

Where are the grapevines? Only in one corner — the old copy wrapped the arms in trailing vines, but the photos show a scroll cartouche with a grape bunch top-left and a pomegranate top-right, and a single vine leaf on each side of the back. No carrying bag appears in the photos, so none is listed.

How do I look after it? Brush the carving with a soft dry brush and wipe the flat faces with a dry cloth. Keep the board out of direct sun and store it closed with the checkers inside.
