Every letter of the Armenian alphabet is cut into the walnut lid of this Armenian backgammon set and filled with vivid blue epoxy, row upon row of them in an ornamental hand, so the whole face reads like a page. 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm / 11.8″ × 23.6″ closed, handmade in Armenia.

Turn the wooden backgammon board over and the other face carries a chequered panel of blue epoxy squares in the middle, with a scroll, a blue quill and an inkwell drawn in two of the corners. Inside, the walnut is left plainer: lattice points with arrowhead tips and a ringed disc in each half incised into the wood, carved scalloped rails at the ends and a long recess in each corner for the dice.

With the board come the wooden checkers in dark and pale and the dice; brass hinges and a clasp on each side keep the lid closed on the shelf.
