Armenian Backgammon Set - Vahanavank in the Vineyards
Two tones of wood do the work on this one. The Vahanavank monastery is cut in the paler wood so it lifts clear of the darker mountains behind it, and around the whole scene the carver has run trailing grapevines heavy with clusters — which is not a decorative choice so much as a geographical one. Syunik has been growing wine for as long as it has been building churches, and on this handmade Armenian backgammon set the two share a lid.
Monks were among the best winemakers Armenia ever had, and nobody in the region finds that remarkable in the least. The vine and the monastery have always been neighbours. Open the clasps, let the bronze hinges swing back, and the full 23.6" / 60 cm playing field completes the set of Armenian evening essentials: something to drink, something to argue about, and somewhere to do both.
