A pale Tree of Life stands in a pool of deep blue epoxy on the lattice-carved lid of this luxury chess table; open the top and the dark squares are the same blue resin, with a carved recess for every piece round the edge. 60 × 60 × 70 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ × 27.6″ open, 30 × 60 cm folded, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden chess table that puts colour where a dark board would sit heavy. The tree is cut in pale wood, branches and roots in one silhouette, and the blue is poured round it and polished level inside an arched cartouche; the rest of the lid and the whole apron are carved in a diamond lattice. Inside, the blue squares are marbled pours against pale wood, with brass discs for the coordinates.

The border of the open board is cut into hollows shaped to the pieces — sixteen a side — so the turned pale and dark army lies flush and the lid closes over it on hinges with a clasp. The legs curve out to pad feet and bolt on after delivery; shut, the table is a slim console against a wall.
