One sunflower the size of the lid: rings of pointed petals spiral out from a seed disc of this luxury backgammon set, each petal cut at its own angle, a zigzag border round the bloom, a star in every corner — carved in relief across a 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ walnut board, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that changes as you walk round it. The petals are faceted so their faces catch the light in turn, from pale gold to deep brown, while the ground outside the bloom is stippled by hand and the round lid sits on a square plan. Folded, the board stands as a half-disc; laid open lid-up, the flower is whole.

Inside, the walnut goes plain and striped: points scored in fine lines with scroll tops, a sun drawn in each half, scalloped rails, a stippled crescent in each round shoulder and troughs along the ends for the checkers and dice. Brass clasps hold the halves shut.
