A sun with a calm, smiling face fills the centre of this luxury backgammon set, its rays flowing out like flames to a zigzag ring, an eight-point star in every corner and a stippled ground behind it all — carved in relief across a 60 × 60 cm / 23.6″ × 23.6″ walnut board, handmade in Armenia.

This is the wooden backgammon set that puts light into the darkest wood: every ray is a separate curling tongue, undercut so it throws its own shadow, the face has closed lids and a small smile, and the chip-carved zigzag ring and beaded moulding hold the whole disc. The sun spans both halves, so it is whole when the board lies open lid-up and a rising half-sun when it stands closed.

Underneath, nothing competes with the sun: the field is bare striped walnut, twelve points a side drawn in single scored lines that finish in a small arrowhead, a flower head at the heart of each half, scalloped rails, and a long trough at each end where the checkers and dice ride. Two brass clasps keep it closed.
