This is the wooden chess set that looks upholstered in wicker. The weave stands in real relief on all four sides with a stippled ground in the gaps, the corners are mitred so the pattern turns cleanly, and the squares are inlaid pale and brown at a size that suits a desk or a side table. The 32 pieces are turned in two woods, one side pale, the other near-black.

Folded, it is a slim case that slips into its bag. Turned over and opened, it shows a backgammon field cut into the inside — pale points, a knot in each half — that waits for checkers of your own; the chess pieces are what ships with it.
